YMCA Youth Sports Philosophy

YMCA Youth Sports builds strong kids, strong families and strong communities by allowing each child the chance to play at least half of each game without the pressure of competition or tryouts. Skill development and healthy lifestyles are emphasized along with the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

At the YMCA we stress fun and skills over winning and competition, in a safe, supportive and healthy environment. We encourage parental participation by training staff and volunteers, collaborating with local churches and schools, and building strong relationships throughout the community. YMCA Youth Sports - a safe place to play, grow, and have fun for all.

The YMCA makes every player a winner by emphasizing the following areas:

  • Everyone Plays: Every player is placed on a team and coached by a trained volunteer. There are no tryouts or cuts. Each participant will play at least half of each game. All players will have the opportunity to play different positions in the game.
  • Sports Skills: Each player will be taught the fundamental skills of the game. Self-confidence and discipline will be enhanced through the learning of these skills.
  • Sportsmanship: Learning how to compete with a positive attitude is the foundation of our programs. Respect for players, coaches, officials and parents is required at all games and practices. The outcome of all games is kept in perspective. Abusive language or violent behavior is not allowed.
  • Fitness: The improvement of the players' flexibility, muscle tone and cardiovascular efficiency is stressed.
  • Family Involvement: Family members are encouraged to become involved as coaches, officials, scorekeepers and spectators. Family ties are strengthened through this involvement.
  • Teamwork: Each team is asked to work together to form an effective unit. The coaches, officials and parents also work together toward the same goal. Teaching leadership and taking responsibility as a team are important elements.
  • Lifetime Attitudes: It is hoped that the player, coach and spectator will carry attitudes learned in our programs throughout their lives.
  • Fun: Playing for fun is the basic reason we have youth sports. League standings are not kept and there are no playoffs.
